Abductors Freed ABS-CBN News Team

Last June 8, 2008, the ABS-CBN News Team headed by Ces Drilon together with the Mindanao State University professor and peace advocate, Prof. Octavio Dinampo, were abducted by an armed group believed to be members of Abu Sayyaf in Sulu.

Initially, the group released Angelo Valderama, one of the team’s cameraman, on June 12, 2008. There were 3 left with the armed group and so, Mayor Isnaji, a Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) leader whom the kidnappers agreed to be an emissary. The negotiating team was led by Sulu Governor Sakur Tan and Vice-Governor Hadja Nur Ana Sahidullah.

Days had passed with uncertainties for the release of the team. Until an Ultimatum was set by the kidnappers with a ransom of 15 million pesos that will end at 12 noon of June 17, 2008. However, no 15 million pesos was generated as the ABS-CBN and the government sticks to its ‘no ransom policy’  -this is to prevent kidnapping as business for these armed group. Tension arose as to what will happen after 12 noon. Suddenly, a call from the kidnappers to the son of Mayor Isnaji, Jun Isnaji relieved all the members of the negotiating committee and the families of the victims as an extension of the ultimatum was agreed, yet there was no definite time of extension.

With that statement,  PNP Chief Avelino Razon said that the team will soon be released. The PNP and AFP were on standby to support any tension that will arise. While some co-workers and families of the victims were offering prayers for their release.

Late June 17, 2008, the group of Ces Drilon with Prof. Dinampo were freed. Immediately, the authorities sent them to the Provincial Hospital for a check-up. If necessary, the team will be staying in the hospital before they’ll proceed to Zamboanga City.
